Mom, Am I Weird?
$15.00
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition that many parents, myself included, are currently navigating. As adults, we have abundant resources, such as technology and professionals, to support our mission of helping our children thrive despite what can be a challenging diagnosis. In contrast, our children perceive their condition and the world around them in ways that are vastly different from what most of us can imagine, and their understanding remains a work in progress.
I’ve been fortunate enough to work with both neurotypical and neurodivergent children for over 25 years. Although I may not have the credentials to be considered an “expert” in the field, my life has been dedicated to these special children. I learn far more from them than their finite minds can truly comprehend. ASD affects individuals differently than it does the people who care for them. Much like the spectrum of severity, the understanding and management of the condition also vary.
Teaching in a preschool setting allowed me to observe autism in children, but that experience did not prepare me to parent a child with autism. Despite my psychology degree, nearly three decades of experience, and enough research papers to write a book, nothing has taught me more about the intricacies of my son’s brain than watching him act and react to the nuances of this world encroaching on his mere existence.
I truly hope this book is read and enjoyed by both neurotypical and neurodivergent children. May it foster empathy and consideration for those who have yet to find their voice.
My son, like many young children with autism, rarely sees ASD as problematic. Therefore, for those of us who may not understand the idiosyncrasies, may we always show kindness and respect. Let us demonstrate to the world and God’s special children the importance of acceptance and inclusion. There is absolutely nothing “weird” about that. --Talysha Teh
